Balikpapan – The Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) continues to strengthen its role as a public, technology-oriented university by officially launching the Bachelor’s Program in Marine Engineering Systems starting in the 2026 academic year. This newly established program is designed to respond to the growing demands of the maritime industry, particularly in the areas of sustainability, digital transformation, and maritime energy transition.
The Bachelor’s Program in Marine Engineering Systems has received official approval under Decree No. 1092/B/0/2025 and aims to develop graduates with strong competencies in ship design, operation, and supporting systems, aligned with current technological advancements and industrial needs.
Today’s maritime sector requires more than conventional engineering skills. Engineers are increasingly expected to understand energy efficiency, decarbonization, and smart ship systems. Responding to these challenges, the Marine Engineering Systems program at ITK is guided by a vision to advance knowledge and technology in sustainable and digitally driven ship systems, while positioning Kalimantan as a living laboratory for maritime innovation.
Kalimantan’s strategic location, combined with the development of the New Capital City (Ibu Kota Nusantara/IKN), provides a highly relevant ecosystem for applied learning, research, and innovation in the maritime and shipbuilding sectors.
The Bachelor’s Program in Marine Engineering Systems at ITK offers several distinctive advantages, including the integration of ship design and operational systems with contemporary strategic issues such as digitalization and energy transition. The curriculum is developed using an adaptive, project-based, and industry-linked learning approach, enabling students to engage directly with real-world maritime challenges.
Key areas of focus include:
This approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared to meet the evolving needs of the maritime industry.
Graduates of the Bachelor’s Program in Marine Engineering Systems earn the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) and enjoy diverse career prospects across multiple sectors. Career pathways include Design and Project Engineers in shipyards, Surveyors and Approval Engineers at classification societies such as BKI and international classification bodies, as well as engineers in shipping companies, ports, and offshore industries.
Graduates may also pursue careers as maritime systems consultants, entrepreneurs in the maritime sector, or continue their professional journey as academics and researchers in marine and ship system engineering.
The program is supported by faculty members with strong academic and professional backgrounds in marine energy, ship machinery, ship hydrodynamics, control systems, and ocean engineering, holding degrees from leading national and international universities. This academic strength forms the foundation for delivering high-quality education and impactful research.
The Bachelor’s Program in Marine Engineering Systems admits 40 students annually through SNBP, SNBT, and ITK’s Independent Admission Pathway. Through the establishment of the Bachelor’s Program in Marine Engineering Systems, ITK invites Indonesia’s young generation to take part in shaping a modern, efficient, and sustainable maritime industry, while contributing to the nation’s long-term vision toward Indonesia Emas 2045.
