BALIKPAPAN – National infrastructure development should no longer focus solely on physical construction but must also improve people's quality of life, strengthen economic competitiveness, and create greater opportunities for future generations. This was one of the key messages delivered by Dr. H. Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, M.Sc., M.P.A., M.A., during his scientific oration at the Open Senate Session commemorating the 12th anniversary of Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK).
In his presentation, AHY addressed various global challenges currently facing Indonesia, including geopolitical uncertainty, economic instability, technological disruption, climate change, and increasing competition for resources among nations. These challenges require Indonesia to strengthen its development foundations through adaptive infrastructure, highly skilled human resources, and innovations capable of responding to society's needs.
AHY also highlighted Indonesia's strategic position as an archipelagic nation, with approximately two-thirds of its territory consisting of water. This geographical characteristic offers significant potential for maritime economic development while simultaneously presenting challenges in ensuring connectivity between regions.
In this context, infrastructure plays a crucial role in connecting communities with opportunities. The development of roads, ports, transportation facilities, and other supporting infrastructure must be directed toward facilitating economic activities and expanding access to public services.
Beyond improving connectivity, infrastructure development must also address people's fundamental needs, particularly in education, healthcare, public housing, and community facilities. High-quality infrastructure is expected not only to stimulate economic growth but also to deliver tangible improvements in public welfare.
Meanwhile, AHY emphasized that human resources are among the nation's most valuable assets in facing global competition. Education, technological proficiency, and skills development serve as essential foundations for enabling Indonesia to capitalize on opportunities arising from economic transformation.
This urgency has become increasingly evident amid rapid advancements in digital technology, industrial automation, and artificial intelligence, which continue to reshape the skills and competencies required in the workforce.
For technology-focused higher education institutions such as ITK, these perspectives are directly relevant to strengthening education, research, and innovation development. Universities are expected to produce graduates who possess not only strong academic competencies but also the ability to develop practical solutions to development challenges.
Through the commemoration of ITK's 12th anniversary, AHY's scientific oration offered valuable insights into the interconnected roles of infrastructure, human capital, and the future of national development. His perspectives also reinforced ITK's role as a higher education institution committed to contributing to the advancement of Kalimantan and Indonesia.
