Balikpapan – Two air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters may not clean a room at the same speed. Their performance depends on how effectively the filters capture particles and how much air passes through them. Understanding the specifications helps ensure the device meets your needs.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), high-efficiency mechanical filters can help capture smoke particles. However, the device’s capacity must match the room size.
Understand the filters and how they work
A motor drives a fan that draws room air through the filters before circulating it back into the room. HEPA filters capture fine particles, while activated carbon helps reduce certain gases and odors. These components serve different purposes and do not remove all pollutants.
Check the CADR rating
CADR, or Clean Air Delivery Rate, indicates the amount of clean air a device delivers per unit of time. It is typically expressed in m³/hour or CFM. For smoky conditions, check the smoke-specific CADR rating if available.
For illustration, a room measuring 4 × 4 meters with a ceiling height of 3 meters has a volume of 48 m³. An air purifier with a CADR of 240 m³/hour delivers an equivalent clean-air volume of approximately five times the room’s volume per hour. This calculation does not guarantee pollution-free air, as smoke entering the room, air mixing, and device settings affect actual performance.
Examine additional features
Labels such as “ion,” “plasma,” or “sterilization” do not automatically indicate effective smoke filtration. Some electronic technologies can generate ozone, which irritates the respiratory tract. Check emissions testing information and avoid devices that intentionally generate ozone in occupied rooms.
Settings and maintenance matter
Quiet mode generally reduces airflow. During smoky conditions, the EPA recommends running the device continuously at the highest feasible fan speed. Keep air inlets and outlets unobstructed, and maintain and replace filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Choosing an air purifier involves checking more than feature names. Check the filters, understand the CADR, and match the device to your room, while also reducing smoke entry and indoor pollution sources.
