Balikpapan - Student exchange programs and field experience have once again demonstrated their positive impact on higher education. This was reflected in the achievement of Firda Nevira Putri, a student of the Urban and Regional Planning Program at Institut Teknologi Kalimantan, who earned a GPA of 3.92 and was named the institute’s best graduate at the 2026 ITK graduation ceremony.
Her accomplishment proves that active participation in programs outside the classroom, such as student exchanges and internships, does not hinder academic achievement. Instead, these experiences strengthen competencies and enrich the learning process.
During her studies, Firda actively participated in a student exchange program at Institut Teknologi Bandung in the field of Urban and Regional Planning. In addition, she gained practical work experience and was involved in various projects related to planning and consultancy.
One of the projects she worked on involved compiling an institutional profile book and conducting studies on spatial planning violations in East Kalimantan, many of which were influenced by plantation activities and land use practices. These experiences provided her with direct insight into the real dynamics of regional planning in the field.
For her final thesis, Firda focused on the topic of green open spaces (RTH) in Balikpapan, which play an important role in creating a sustainable city. She admitted that completing her thesis was not always an easy process.
“At first, I was confused because the analysis was quite complex and I did not have a clear direction. However, my academic supervisors were very supportive in guiding me until it was finally completed,” she explained.
Behind her academic success, family support became the main factor that strengthened her journey throughout university.
“My parents played the biggest role. They always supported me, both morally and in many other ways. I am truly grateful for everything they have given me,” she said.
Firda’s active involvement in exchange programs, internships, and academic activities shows that learning does not only happen inside the classroom. This aligns with the spirit of “ITK Berdampak” (Impactful ITK), where students are encouraged to gain real-world experience as part of their educational process.
Looking ahead, Firda plans to continue her studies at a higher level through scholarship opportunities while also considering a career in the planning or government sector. She also encouraged other students to be brave in taking opportunities during their university years.
“If there are opportunities such as exchanges, internships, or other programs, do not hesitate to try them. The important thing is to stay balanced and consistent,” she advised.
Firda Nevira Putri’s achievement serves as proof that broad experiences through exchange programs and field involvement do not hinder academic performance. On the contrary, they can help students become outstanding graduates who are ready to face future challenges.
With the spirit of “ITK Berdampak,” Institut Teknologi Kalimantan remains committed to producing excellent graduates who are adaptive, experienced, and capable of making meaningful contributions to national development.
