Balikpapan -  Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) continues to expand educational opportunities for prospective students by opening three new study programs for the 2026/2027 academic year. The new programs are Marine Transportation Engineering, Marine Systems Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering.

The introduction of these programs reflects ITK’s efforts to respond to technological developments, industry needs, and emerging development challenges in Kalimantan and Indonesia. They also provide prospective students with broader opportunities to pursue studies in maritime transportation, ship systems, and healthcare technology.

The Marine Transportation Engineering Study Program focuses on the planning and management of maritime transportation systems, including inter-island connectivity, ports, logistics distribution, and navigational safety. This field is particularly important for Indonesia as an archipelagic country whose movement of people and goods relies heavily on sea transportation.

Meanwhile, Marine Systems Engineering covers the various systems that support ship operations, including propulsion, electrical systems, machinery, energy, maintenance, and safety. Graduates are expected to contribute to the development of the maritime industry and increasingly advanced ship technologies.

The Biomedical Engineering Study Program integrates engineering, technology, and healthcare. It provides students with opportunities to study the development of medical devices, medical instrumentation systems, rehabilitation technologies, health-data processing, and innovative equipment that supports medical services.

These three fields are closely connected to the development needs of East Kalimantan. Stronger maritime and logistics sectors are essential for regional connectivity, while the continued development of healthcare services requires professionals who can develop and manage medical technologies.

In addition to the three programs introduced for the 2026/2027 academic year, ITK is also planning to develop a Geomatics Engineering Study Program in 2027. The program is expected to focus on mapping technology, surveying, geographic information systems, remote sensing, and spatial-data management.

Geomatics plays a strategic role in regional planning, infrastructure development, disaster mitigation, natural-resource management, environmental monitoring, and urban development. However, the planned opening of the Geomatics Engineering Study Program remains subject to further preparation and the fulfillment of applicable regulatory requirements.

Through the development of new study programs, ITK seeks to provide education that remains relevant to future needs. Prospective students will gain not only a wider range of academic choices, but also opportunities to contribute to strategic sectors that support sustainable development.

The establishment of Marine Transportation Engineering, Marine Systems Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering forms part of ITK’s commitment to preparing highly skilled talent in science and technology. With the planned development of Geomatics Engineering in 2027, ITK continues to strengthen its role as a technology-focused university that grows alongside the needs of Kalimantan and Indonesia.
