Who would have thought that dragon fruit, long known as a healthy snack, holds great potential in the cosmetic industry? Through creative innovation, dragon fruit extract is now utilized as a safe and appealing natural colorant for lip balm products.
As public awareness of natural ingredients continues to grow, the cosmetic industry is shifting from synthetic materials to more environmentally friendly, nature-based alternatives. This trend encourages the development of innovations that are not only safe for health but also sustainable. Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) actively contributes by delivering research-based innovative solutions.
Dragon fruit (Hylocereus spp.) contains a natural pigment called betacyanin, which produces its distinctive purplish-red color. This pigment is non-toxic, water-soluble, and rich in antioxidants, making it highly suitable as a natural colorant in cosmetic products, particularly lip balm. The extraction process is relatively simple and eco-friendly, using solvents such as water or ethanol.
In lip balm formulations, dragon fruit extract not only provides a soft and elegant natural color but also offers additional benefits for lip health. The presence of vitamin C and flavonoids helps maintain moisture and protect lips from free radicals. With the right composition, this lip balm can produce a range of shades from soft pink to natural red.
This research and innovation were developed by a team consisting of Harrys Samosir (Physics Lecturer at ITK), along with students Tina Sarmila (Physics Study Program, ITK), Loza Asmi Nahara Maharani (Physics Study Program, ITK), and Devina Sanchia Samosir (Mechanical Engineering Department, Politeknik Negeri Balikpapan). This cross-disciplinary collaboration highlights the synergy between academics and students in creating innovative products based on local potential.
This innovation serves as clear evidence that local resources can be developed into high-value products through scientific approaches. In addition to supporting the natural cosmetics trend, this product also has the potential to become a research-based business opportunity for students and the wider community.
Ultimately, this dragon fruit-based lip balm innovation demonstrates that beauty does not have to come from synthetic chemicals. By harnessing Indonesia’s natural wealth, ITK continues to encourage the creation of creative, safe, sustainable, and economically valuable solutions.
