BALIKPAPAN – Students of the Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) have once again demonstrated their creativity by developing an innovation that showcases the rich potential of local resources. Through a project entitled "Palangkaraya Rattan Basket," the students transform locally sourced rattan into high-value handcrafted products that not only offer aesthetic appeal but also empower local communities and promote sustainable economic development.
The innovation utilizes rattan harvested from Rakumpit and Bukit Batu Districts in Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan. While raw rattan is often sold at a relatively low price, processing it into functional handicrafts significantly increases its economic value.
The product line includes storage baskets, hampers, serving trays, fruit baskets, laundry baskets, and souvenir baskets. Designed with a modern aesthetic while preserving traditional craftsmanship, these products are environmentally friendly, multifunctional, and suitable for household, decorative, and commercial purposes.
The production process involves several stages, beginning with the selection of high-quality rattan, followed by frame construction, weaving by skilled local artisans, finishing, and quality control to ensure durability and premium craftsmanship.
Beyond product innovation, the initiative also creates meaningful social impact. It provides employment opportunities for local artisans, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), women, and young people while encouraging the preservation of traditional weaving techniques. Training programs in weaving and product design are expected to further enhance community skills and increase the competitiveness of local products in national and international markets.
From an environmental perspective, the project adopts selective and sustainable harvesting practices to help preserve forest ecosystems while maximizing the value of renewable natural resources. This approach reflects the principles of a circular economy and sustainable resource management.
The Palangkaraya Rattan Basket innovation also contributes to the achievement of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including No Poverty (SDG 1), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Life on Land (SDG 15).
Through this project, ITK students demonstrate that impactful innovation is not limited to advanced technology. By combining local wisdom, creative design, entrepreneurship, and community empowerment, they have created a value-added product that supports regional economic development while preserving Indonesia's cultural heritage.
As a university committed to fostering innovation and sustainable development, Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) continues to encourage its students to develop solutions that address real societal challenges. The Palangkaraya Rattan Basket stands as a testament to how local resources, when combined with creativity and collaboration, can generate lasting economic, social, and environmental benefits.
