BALIKPAPAN – Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) is strengthening its national collaboration network through an initiative to establish the Indonesian State Institutes of Technology Consortium (ITX), alongside Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), and Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA). This strategic partnership among four state institutes of technology was one of the key highlights of the Open Senate Session commemorating ITK's 12th anniversary.
ITX was initiated as a collaborative platform for technology-focused universities to accelerate research development, innovation commercialization, and the competitiveness of national industries. The partnership responds to Indonesia's need to transform its economy toward becoming an advanced nation driven by knowledge and technology.
The establishment of ITX also addresses the relatively limited contribution of research and development to Indonesia's national economy. According to the consortium's presentation materials, Indonesia's research and development expenditure accounts for approximately 0.23 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This situation highlights the need to strengthen a research ecosystem that effectively connects universities, industries, government institutions, and investors.
Through ITX, the four institutions aim to establish a complementary innovation ecosystem by leveraging each university's distinctive strengths and areas of expertise.
ITB will focus on advanced manufacturing, new energy, and semiconductor technologies through Bandung Tech Valley. ITS will develop industrial automation, robotics, and electric vehicles through the Maritime & Automation Hub. Meanwhile, ITERA will strengthen renewable energy, agroindustry, and bioeconomy development through the Sumatera Energy & Bioindustry Park.
ITK, meanwhile, will take on a strategic role in developing coastal technologies, digital fisheries, and maritime energy through the Kalimantan Pesisir Tech Hub initiative. This focus aligns with Kalimantan's geographical characteristics and its significant potential in marine resource development, maritime technology, and coastal-based economic activities.
The collaboration is expected to integrate the strengths of each institution into a unified research and innovation ecosystem.
As part of its development roadmap, ITX aims to establish four technology development centers capable of advancing innovations to the commercialization stage, targeting Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 8–9. The consortium also plans to develop 150 market-ready technology products, establish 20 deep-tech startups, and train 5,000 highly skilled technology professionals through industry-recognized certification programs.
In addition, the consortium plans to develop InnoHub ITX, a national digital platform designed to connect university research outcomes with industry needs and potential investment opportunities.
For ITK, participation in ITX creates opportunities to expand research partnerships, enhance the relevance of technological innovations to industrial needs, and further develop technologies that build upon Kalimantan's regional strengths and resources.
The commemoration of ITK's 12th anniversary marks an important milestone in strengthening this inter-university collaboration. Through ITX, the synergy among the four state institutes of technology is expected to accelerate the transformation of research outcomes into commercially viable innovations that generate economic value and deliver tangible benefits to society.
This collaboration also underscores that national technological advancement requires strong institutional connectivity, industry support, and a shared commitment to building a sustainable innovation ecosystem in Indonesia.
