Balikpapan, November 13, 2025 — The Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) organized a Fire Extinguisher Training (APAR) aimed at improving the preparedness and awareness of the academic community in dealing with potential fire hazards on campus. The training was attended by lecturers, staff, and students, particularly those whose activities involve a high risk of fire exposure.

Opening Remarks and Guidance from ITK Leadership

The event was officially opened by Vice Rector II for Planning, Finance, and General Affairs, Ir. Khakim Ghozali, M.MT, who also delivered guidance and safety reminders before the training began. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of maintaining vigilance and ensuring that fire extinguishers across the campus remain in good condition.

“Several fire extinguishers at ITK need to be refilled because some have already expired. Academic members who work in high-risk areas must pay close attention to this training to enhance awareness and safety,” said Ir. Khakim Ghozali.

Training Session by CV Borneo Patra Mandiri

The technical training session was conducted by CV Borneo Patra Mandiri, a company specializing in distributing light and heavy fire extinguishers, refilling services, maintenance, and spare parts across East Kalimantan. The material was presented by Asryannoor Oktrigantara, the company’s Operational Coordinator.

Asryannoor explained the different classes of fires and the appropriate types of fire extinguishers to handle each. He highlighted that understanding the classification of fires is essential in choosing the correct type of extinguisher to ensure effective fire control.

Fire Classes and Types of Fire Extinguishers

The session introduced three main fire classes:

  • Class A: Fires caused by solid combustible materials such as paper, wood, or rubber.
  • Class B: Fires resulting from flammable liquids such as gasoline, diesel, or chemical substances.
  • Class C: Fires caused by electrical sources or equipment.

Each type of fire requires a specific fire extinguisher for optimal results:

  1. Dry Chemical Powder – Suitable for Classes A, B, and C fires, though it leaves a powdery residue that may damage equipment or contaminate food.
  2. Foam Extinguisher – Contains water and chemical foam, effective for Classes A and B fires, particularly those involving flammable liquids.
  3. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) – Designed specifically for electrical (Class C) fires; leaves no residue and is ideal for use on electronic devices.

Strengthening ITK’s Commitment to Campus Safety

Through this training, ITK reaffirms its commitment to creating a safe, alert, and safety-conscious campus environment. The event concluded with a live demonstration of fire extinguisher use, giving participants hands-on experience in extinguishing fires using different types of equipment.

By conducting this program, ITK hopes that all members of its academic community will be more vigilant and prepared to respond quickly and effectively to fire incidents, ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone on campus.
