Balikpapan – Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) takes another strategic step forward! In the 2026 academic year, this technology-focused state university officially launched three new study programs, designed to cultivate highly skilled professionals in the maritime and health sectors.

This move strengthens ITK’s position as a strategic state university supporting Indonesia’s new capital city (IKN) and as a center for technological innovation in East Kalimantan.

S-1 Marine Transportation Engineering: Pioneering Program in Kalimantan

The Marine Transportation Engineering program is the first of its kind in Kalimantan, focusing on waterway transport, port management, and maritime logistics.

Students will develop expertise in:

• Maritime operations and management,
• Port planning and management,
• Maritime logistics and supply chains,
• Investment, insurance, and business feasibility in the maritime sector.

Adopting a living laboratory approach, students gain hands-on experience in ports and strategic shipping lanes in East Kalimantan. They also become familiar with digitalization and automation in maritime systems.

Graduates have career opportunities in shipping companies, port authorities, shipyards, and government institutions such as the Ministry of Transportation, Pelindo, ASDP, Pelni, and IKN Authority.

S-1 Naval Systems Engineering: Tackling Modern Maritime Challenges

The Naval Systems Engineering program prepares students for the demands of the modern maritime industry, emphasizing energy efficiency, decarbonization, and digitalized ships (smart vessels).

The curriculum covers:

• Ship machinery and piping systems,
• Inspection, maintenance, and ship safety,
• Digital ship systems and smart vessel integration,
• Marine renewable energy for ship operations.

Located strategically in Balikpapan near IKN and major sea transport routes, ITK enables students to learn from real industrial projects.

Graduates can pursue careers as design engineers, project engineers, surveyors, maritime consultants, or entrepreneurs in shipbuilding and related industries.

S-1 Biomedical Engineering: Innovating Healthcare for the Future

The Biomedical Engineering program addresses modern healthcare challenges, including telemedicine and smart medical systems, with a focus on remote areas in Central and Eastern Indonesia.

Students will study:

• Biomechanics and biomaterials,
• Biomedical signal processing and medical instrumentation,
• Medical imaging technology, non-invasive equipment, and assistive devices,
• Health information systems and telemedicine.

The program emphasizes a balance between theoretical knowledge, technical skills, and sensitivity to community needs, enabling graduates to pursue careers in hospitals, health-tech startups, medical device industries, and government health institutions.

ITK as a Living Laboratory & Strategic State University

With its strategic location in Balikpapan, ITK leverages the maritime and geographic potential of East Kalimantan as a living laboratory for hands-on industry experience. The new programs are designed to be adaptive, practical, and project-based, preparing students to compete at national and international levels.
