Balikpapan — The morning atmosphere at the Integrated Laboratory 1 field of Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) on Sunday, August 17, felt different. Amid rows of new students, lecturers, educational staff, and university leaders standing solemnly, the Red and White flag was slowly raised as the national anthem, Indonesia Raya, echoed across the field. Standing among the ceremony leaders, ITK Rector Prof. Dr. Agus Rubiyanto, M.Eng.Sc. was visibly moved to tears as the flag was hoisted.
The moment carried a deeper meaning. This year’s Independence Day ceremony marked the final August 17 ceremony for Prof. Agus and ITK’s two vice rectors, Prof. Erma Suryani, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, and Ir. Khakim Ghozali, M.MT., Vice Rector for Planning, Finance, and General Affairs, whose terms of office will conclude this year.
The ceremony began at 7:30 a.m. WITA and proceeded in an orderly and complete manner, including the flag-raising procession, a moment of silence, the reading of Pancasila and the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution, as well as the Proclamation of Independence. Patriotic and national songs were performed by the student choir.
In the address of the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, which was read during the ceremony, it was emphasized that the hopes of the nation rest on every element of higher education.
“That hope rests on the shoulders of university leaders, who are expected to make campuses a major force in national development.”
The address also highlighted the role of professors in upholding academic integrity, lecturers and researchers in educating future generations, and educational staff in ensuring that university services continue to function effectively. The closing message was directed especially to new students—the generation that will one day lead, create technologies, build industries, and help determine the future direction of the nation.
For the new students in attendance, the ceremony became one of their first meaningful moments of experiencing ITK more closely. For the university leaders approaching the end of their terms, it became a symbolic way to conclude years of service beneath the same national flag they had honored throughout their leadership.
Following the ceremony, participants did not immediately leave the field. The event continued with the Opening Ceremony of ITK’s 12th Anniversary, officially marking the beginning of a series of celebrations for ITK’s anniversary.
