Balikpapan — Another proud achievement has been accomplished by a student of Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK). Martha Pasha Amelia Sinaga, a student from the 2023 cohort, secured 3rd Place in the Disaster Category at the 2025 Scientific Writing Competition (LKTI) organized by PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional RU V Balikpapan under the theme “Kaliandra Science Spark: Light Up Your Innovation.”
In this academic competition at the city level, Martha presented an innovation titled “Utilization of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) as a Sustainable Solution for Soil Structure Improvement and Landslide Risk Reduction in the Kaliandra Highland Area.” The idea was inspired by the geographical characteristics of the Kaliandra region, which is dominated by highland terrain and is highly prone to landslides.
Through her research, Martha proposed an environmentally based approach by utilizing Black Soldier Fly (BSF) as an innovative solution. BSF is not only widely known for organic waste management but also has the potential to improve soil quality, thereby strengthening soil structure and reducing landslide risks in a sustainable manner.
During the preparation phase, Martha conducted direct field observations to understand the real conditions of the study area. She then analyzed existing issues and developed a scientific work that is both practical and solution-oriented.
“Through this competition, I wanted to further develop my skills while contributing real solutions to environmental problems,” Martha stated.
The competition took place from September 2025 to January 2026 in Balikpapan. This achievement demonstrates that ITK students are capable of contributing through scientific innovation that has a direct impact on society.
Martha also expressed her hope that more ITK students will actively participate in similar competitions and continue to develop innovative ideas.
This achievement further reflects ITK’s commitment to fostering a generation of young individuals who are excellent, creative, and solution-oriented in addressing the challenges of sustainable development.
