Balikpapan, October 4, 2025 – As part of the 19th Graduation Ceremony of Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK), a scientific oration was delivered by Ferdinan Sihombing, Head of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) Regional Office for East and North Kalimantan. Presenting material entitled “The Transformation of Indonesia’s Capital Market: Opportunities and Challenges for the Young Generation in Kalimantan”, Ferdinan shared extensive insights on the development of the national capital market and emphasized the importance of youth involvement in driving economic growth.

In his presentation, Ferdinan highlighted that Indonesia is one of the major powers in the ASEAN region, with a population accounting for 40% of ASEAN’s total and a significant contribution to regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Supported by abundant natural resources, a strategic position, and a conducive investment climate, Indonesia has a tremendous opportunity to continue strengthening its role in the global economy.

Furthermore, Ferdinan explained that the capital market is not only a platform for trading stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, but also serves as a means of investment for the public, a provider of employment opportunities, and a vital source of financing for entrepreneurs and the nation. The latest data show that as of September 2025, more than 955 companies are listed on the IDX, with a market capitalization exceeding IDR 14,890 trillion and a steadily growing number of domestic investors reaching 18.6 million.

One notable phenomenon revealed was the increasing participation of the younger generation in the capital market. Currently, investors under the age of 30 dominate the number of domestic retail investors, signaling a shift toward financial awareness among university students and young professionals. Ferdinan stressed that this trend must continue to be encouraged so that young people, particularly in Kalimantan, will not only be spectators but also active players in economic transformation through the capital market.

In addition, Ferdinan touched on the vast potential of the Islamic capital market in Indonesia, which has seen significant growth both in the number of issuers and investors. This opens broader opportunities for young people who wish to invest in accordance with Sharia principles.

At the end of his oration, Ferdinan urged ITK graduates to make use of their knowledge, skills, and networks to take part in building the nation’s economy. According to him, the young generation of Kalimantan has great potential to contribute—not only as professionals in various sectors but also as investors and drivers of innovation in Indonesia’s capital market.

“The capital market belongs to all of us. The young generation must be brave enough to take on roles, not only at the national level but also as the driving force of regional economies. Kalimantan has great potential, and the future is in your hands,” Ferdinan emphasized.

Through this scientific oration, ITK’s 19th Graduation Ceremony was not only a celebration of academic achievement but also a source of inspiration, preparing graduates to compete and contribute to Indonesia’s development toward Indonesia Emas 2045.
