Balikpapan — The Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Study Program (TMM) at Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) welcomed academics from Saga University, Japan, for the International Guest Lecture x Internship Poster Seminar on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Through guest lectures and an exhibition of internship outcomes, students explored research developments and shared their experiences of applying academic knowledge in the workplace.

The event was held as part of the Final Meeting of the JST NEXUS program (Japan Science and Technology Agency: Networked Exchange, United Strength Partnership between Japan and ASEAN). Initiated by TMM ITK, the event continued its collaboration with Saga University to strengthen academic ties and expand knowledge exchange between Japan and ASEAN countries through ITK.

Held at ITK’s Integrated Laboratory Auditorium, the guest lecture session featured Prof. Dr. Masato Tominaga and Saga University doctoral student Rajkumar Venkateswari. Both speakers shared insights into molecular recognition and the development of electrochemical detection technologies.

Prof. Dr. Masato Tominaga presented Biomolecular Recognition and Bioelectrocatalysis for Advanced Electrochemical Biosensing. Rajkumar Venkateswari discussed research on cortisol detection using a molecularly imprinted polymer electrode. Their presentations introduced students to the connections between materials development and biosensor research.

Hizkia Alpha Dewanto moderated the discussion. The event also featured welcoming remarks from Andi Idhil Ismail, Dean of ITK’s Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Technology (FRTI), and a performance by ITK’s student dance organization.

During the following session, TMM students took on the role of presenters in the Internship Poster Seminar. Through posters and oral presentations, they shared what they had learned during their internships and their experiences of connecting classroom theory with workplace practices.

The seminar provided an opportunity for students to practice communicating information concisely, visually, and systematically. The program also included recognition for the best presentation and best poster.

By bringing together international research and internship experiences, the event enriched the learning experience of TMM ITK students. The collaboration with Saga University also provided an opportunity to build lasting academic relationships through the exchange of experiences, knowledge, and research ideas.
