Balikpapan, May 10, 2025 — On that Saturday morning, the auditorium of the Integrated Laboratory Building at the Kalimantan Institute of Technology (ITK) was filled with joyful faces of graduates and their families. But among all the cheerful stories, one stood out—touching hearts and bringing tears to many: the story of Agustinus Nugraha Mahardika.
A student from the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Technology, Agustinus was officially conferred his degree at ITK’s 18th graduation ceremony. Amid the cheers and applause, Agustinus stood accompanied by his two parents: his spirited mother and his father, who is currently battling the aftermath of a stroke.
A wheelchair and physical limitations did not stop them from being there. With assistance from the ITK graduation committee, Agustinus' family was able to share in this meaningful moment. Their presence was not merely a sign of support, but a powerful testament to love and determination that cannot be defeated by circumstances.
"Yes, ever since I first heard the news that ITK would be established in Balikpapan back when Mr. Awang Faroek Ishak was still Governor—I told myself, my child must study at ITK," said Endangwati, Agustinus’ mother, her eyes sparkling with hope.
For Mrs. Endang, her son studying at ITK wasn’t just a dream—it was a family aspiration. Although the journey wasn't easy, especially with her husband’s condition, the fire to see her child pursue higher education never dimmed. “Even though times were hard, I still wanted my son to go to college. One day, I believed he would prove himself,” she added in a soft but unwavering voice.
Now, that moment has finally arrived. Agustinus not only earned his bachelor's degree, but also proved that limitations do not define one’s ability to achieve a dream.
“My hope is that one day, Agustinus will grow into someone who brings value to this nation. From ITK, for Indonesia,” Mrs. Endang concluded, holding back tears.
Amidst all challenges, the story of Agustinus and his family reminds us that love, prayer, and determination are the true fuel in the journey toward fulfilling a dream. This graduation isn’t just Agustinus’ moment—it belongs to the parents who never stopped believing.
