Balikpapan - Concern for the environment continues to inspire innovative ideas from students. One of them is reflected in the social innovation program SMOKELESS, an initiative that offers a more environmentally friendly approach to household waste management in Wanatirta Village, North Balikpapan.

This program was developed in response to conditions in the field, where household waste is still commonly managed through conventional methods, especially by burning it in open spaces. Such practices not only contribute to air pollution, but also have the potential to cause health problems and reduce the quality of the surrounding environment. In response to this issue, the student team introduced SMOKELESS as a simple, applicable, and community-oriented solution.

SMOKELESS is a social innovation that combines three main components: a low-emission waste incineration device, a waste bank, and commercial waste bins. These three elements are designed to support better waste management, starting from sorting and reducing waste volume to strengthening public awareness of the importance of environmental care.

One of the main products in this program is a low-pollution incinerator. The device is designed with a closed combustion chamber, a ventilation system, a sliding door mechanism, and fire-resistant materials, allowing the burning process to be more controlled and the resulting smoke emissions to be lower than those produced by open burning. Through this design, the community is expected to continue managing waste while reducing its environmental impact.

In addition, this innovation is complemented by a waste bank as a facility for managing recyclable waste and commercial waste bins to support waste sorting at the source. The presence of these facilities makes SMOKELESS more than just a waste-burning solution; it also helps build new habits in waste management that are more orderly and sustainable.

Based on trial results, the SMOKELESS waste incineration device proved effective in helping reduce smoke emissions during the burning process. The system was also considered easier to operate and suitable for household-scale as well as community-scale use. At the same time, the waste bank and commercial waste bins encouraged residents to become more active in sorting and managing waste according to its type.

Overall, the program is expected to generate several positive impacts, including reducing the potential for air pollution, minimizing health risks caused by open waste burning, increasing public awareness of waste sorting, and encouraging the creation of a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

More than just an academic project, SMOKELESS demonstrates how students can provide real solutions based on community needs. This innovation serves as proof that simple ideas, when designed with care and the right approach, can create a direct impact on both the environment and people’s lives.

Through programs like this, students not only learn to apply knowledge, but also develop empathy, collaboration, and social responsibility. SMOKELESS stands as an example of how social innovation can bridge the gap between academia and real community needs, while also becoming a small step toward a healthier environment and a more sustainable future.
