A proud achievement has once again been made by students of the Statistics Study Program at Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK). A team of ITK Statistics students successfully won the Best Infographic Award in the national competition MATICS Universitas Hasanuddin organized by the Himpunan Mahasiswa Matematika Universitas Hasanuddin in Makassar, Sulawesi Selatan. The team, led by Erzha Nafilah Rosady (Statistics 2023), along with two members, Okana Jabbar Wibisana and Riswanty Margareth Malau, demonstrated strong capabilities in data analysis and information visualization through their scientific paper titled “Mapping Indonesia's Digital Society: A K-Means Clustering Approach and Regression Analysis to Identify Influential Factors.”

This research was motivated by the disparity in digital literacy levels among provinces in Indonesia. Based on data from the Indeks Masyarakat Digital Indonesia (IMDI) 2025, there is a significant gap between provinces with the highest scores, such as DKI Jakarta, and those with the lowest scores, such as Papua Pegunungan. Observing this phenomenon, the ITK Statistics student team conducted data analysis to cluster Indonesian provinces based on their digital literacy levels and to identify factors influencing digital literacy across different regions.

In this study, the team applied the K-Means Clustering method to group regions according to their digital index characteristics and used regression analysis to determine variables that significantly influence digital literacy among communities. The research findings were then presented in the form of engaging and informative data visualizations to help readers better understand the condition of digital literacy in Indonesia.

The study produced several key outputs, including a cluster map of Indonesian provinces based on IMDI values, the identification of factors influencing provincial digital literacy levels, and an infographic illustrating the digital literacy landscape of Indonesia in a clear and communicative way. The strength of this data visualization ultimately led the ITK team to win the Best Infographic Award in the competition.

Prior to participating in the competition, the team carried out several preparation stages, including team formation, determining the research idea and topic, finding a faculty advisor, preparing the scientific paper, designing the research infographic, and practicing their scientific presentation. Throughout the process, the team received guidance from Diana Nurlaily, S.Si., M.Stat. as their supervising lecturer.

Erzha Nafilah Rosady, the team leader, stated that their participation in the competition aimed to bring the name of the Statistics Study Program and ITK to the national stage while also expanding their experience in academic competitions during their time as students. She also hopes that more ITK students will be encouraged to participate in competitions and achieve accomplishments that bring pride to the university. This achievement demonstrates that ITK students not only excel academically but are also capable of presenting data analysis relevant to national issues and packaging it in innovative and impactful visualizations.
