A major step toward self-sufficiency and sustainability was celebrated, as the Australian Consulate General, local government, and residents marked the completion of the Clean Water Filtration and Solar Electricity Project in Sungai Merdeka, Samboja Barat District.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Todd Dias, Australian Consul General for Eastern Indonesia, accompanied by Cindy Rachmaningrum (Acting Public Diplomacy & Research Manager), Florida Ompusunggu (Deal Team Investment Officer), and Rahmat Idris (Admin Assistant). They were warmly welcomed by local dignitaries including:

• Ms. Farida, Member of the Kutai Kartanegara District Parliament (2019–2024)
• Mr. Burhan, Head of Samboja Barat Subdistrict
• Mr. Agus, Head of Sungai Merdeka Village
• Mr. Sulendra, Chief of Samboja Police

• Mr. Nur Hasem, Head of RT 07
• and the residents of RT 07, who enthusiastically welcomed the new facilities.

A True Transformation for Local Farmers

Led by Ms. Happy Aprilia S.ST., M.T., M.Eng.,Ph.D.as project manager, this initiative introduced a modern filtration system that utilizes water from a post-mining void. Water that was previously unused is now treated into clean water suitable for irrigation, washing, and sanitation, replacing the unreliable and scarce groundwater sources the farmers once relied on.

In addition to clean water, the project also brought a solar-powered electricity system that enables farmers to operate water pumps independently, reducing their dependence on PLN (the state electricity provider), which often suffers from outages. This renewable energy solution offers farmers more flexibility and efficiency, while also opening opportunities for small-scale agricultural processing industries.

Long-Term Impact for Community Resilience

Beyond improving daily life, the project has created lasting developmental benefits. Through training and workshops conducted earlier, residents of RT 07 are now equipped with the knowledge to operate and maintain the system independently.

Although the system is working optimally, ongoing maintenance is essential. Residents are advised to perform regular potassium alum treatments to maintain water clarity and reduce bacteria levels, particularly due to environmental influences such as nearby poultry farms.

In his remarks, Consul General Todd Dias expressed his appreciation for the strong collaboration between Australia and the local community. “This project reflects a powerful spirit of cooperation. We are proud to be part of a real solution that has a direct impact on people's lives,” he said.

The project is a tangible example of how international support, when combined with local leadership and community participation, can bring about meaningful and sustainable change.
