Equipped with Materials Science, Adi Wisaka Helps Oversee Indonesia’s Infrastructure

Balikpapan - Materials and Metallurgical Engineering is not solely concerned with metals, structures, and material properties. For Adi Wisaka, a 2017 alumnus of Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK), the discipline has become a foundation for contributing to the development and management of roads and bridges across Indonesia.

Adi currently works as a Junior Expert in Road and Bridge Management at the Directorate of Road and Bridge Implementation Systems and Strategies, Directorate General of Highways, Ministry of Public Works.

Behind the roads and bridges used by the public every day lies a long process involving planning, monitoring, evaluation, and data management. In his role, Adi supports infrastructure development by monitoring and evaluating programs, managing data, and preparing recommendations to improve the quality of road and bridge implementation.

“Although much of the work takes place behind the scenes, every process plays an important role in ensuring that infrastructure development is effective, accountable, and beneficial to society,” Adi said.

Lessons from Campus for the Professional World

Adi’s professional journey is closely connected to the experience he gained while studying in ITK’s Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Study Program. Laboratory activities and academic projects helped him develop analytical thinking, communication, collaboration, attention to detail, and adaptability.

Analytical skills, for example, are essential for processing data and transforming it into recommendations that support decision-making. Meanwhile, communication and coordination skills allow him to build effective collaboration with different work units and stakeholders.

Attention to detail is equally important when managing data, documents, and technical administration. Adaptability is also necessary for responding to evolving policies, regulations, and organizational needs.

“The knowledge acquired at university serves as a foundation. Professional experience then shapes our ability to make decisions, adapt to change, and provide solutions to various challenges,” he explained.

According to Adi, the professional world does not always seek the most academically accomplished person. A willingness to continue learning, the ability to collaborate, integrity, and responsibility are equally important qualities in building a career.

When Infrastructure Becomes a Form of Public Service

One of the most memorable moments in Adi’s career was when he was entrusted to serve as a Disaster Response Volunteer in Sumatra. The experience gave him a new perspective on the meaning of public service as a member of the state civil apparatus.

During the disaster response, he witnessed firsthand how infrastructure plays an essential role in connecting assistance with affected communities, opening access to emergency services, and supporting recovery efforts.

“The opportunity to contribute in such a situation was an extremely valuable experience. It further strengthened my commitment to providing the best possible public service through my work,” he said.

The experience showed that roads and bridges are more than physical structures. Infrastructure connects communities with essential services, humanitarian assistance, economic activity, and the hope of rebuilding their lives.

Growing Through Small Steps

Adi encouraged ITK students not to use their university years solely to pursue strong academic grades. Campus life should also become a space for developing character, integrity, and competencies that will be essential in the professional world.

He encouraged students to take advantage of various opportunities, including joining organizations, becoming laboratory assistants, undertaking internships, participating in research, and engaging in personal-development activities.

“Do not be afraid to begin with small steps. Continue learning, remain open to new challenges, and keep developing yourself. Consistency, a willingness to grow, and a professional attitude will open many opportunities to make a greater contribution to society,” he advised.

Through Adi Wisaka’s journey, materials science has found a broader space for contribution. From university laboratories to Indonesia’s national road and bridge management system, small and consistent efforts can grow into meaningful public service whose benefits are felt by many.
