Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) once again presents an inspiring story from its alumni. This time, Ali Fahdian, a graduate of the Electrical Engineering program from the class of 2016, shares his academic and professional journey. Currently, Ali is working as a Junior Engineer I Instrument at PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan, one of the key companies involved in the development of the Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP) JO Balikpapan project.

Studying at ITK: More Than Just Academics

Ali expressed that his time at ITK was one of the most valuable moments in his life, thanks to the supportive academic environment and inspiring lecturers.

"I was inspired by several lecturers who not only taught theory but also guided students in personal development. Facilities such as laboratories and libraries greatly supported my learning process," he said.

Beyond academics, Ali was also active in student organizations. He believes this experience helped him sharpen non-academic skills such as leadership and time management. Engaging with friends from diverse backgrounds enriched his perspective and strengthened collaboration.

Applying Electrical Engineering Knowledge in the Workplace

Ali's current job at PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan is highly relevant to his educational background. His studies in Electrical Engineering equipped him with fundamental knowledge in electricity, instrumentation, and control systems, which he now applies in his professional tasks.

"The technical knowledge I gained at ITK has helped me understand and implement the instrumentation systems used in the refinery industry," he explained.

As a Junior Engineer I Instrument, Ali is responsible for Logic Function Testing, integration, verification of instrumentation systems, and commissioning of equipment and units in the OSBL, ISBL, Lawe-Lawe, and Early Work projects. His duties ensure that all systems function according to the project's design specifications. He has successfully tackled major challenges, such as adapting to a dynamic work environment, through flexibility and a strong willingness to learn.

Keys to Success: Skills Gained from ITK

Ali emphasized that the skills he acquired at ITK have been highly useful in his career, including:

  • Technical knowledge: A deep understanding of instrumentation and control systems.
  • Data analysis: The ability to read and interpret instrument data to ensure process efficiency.
  • Project management: College experiences that helped him prioritize tasks and set work targets.
  • Teamwork skills: Collaborating with colleagues from various backgrounds in the industry.
  • Safety awareness: Applying the safety principles learned on campus to the workplace.
