Balikpapan — The Kalimantan Institute of Technology (ITK) continues to strengthen its role as a strategic institution in developing human resources and reinforcing the national innovation ecosystem. This was highlighted during a meeting between the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), and the Rector of ITK, Prof. Dr. Agus Rubiyanto, M.Eng.Sc., along with their respective teams, held on April 13, 2026, in Jakarta.
The meeting was not merely a courtesy visit but also served as a strategic discussion forum on the importance of synergy among the government, industry, academia, and media in advancing knowledge-based national development.
On this occasion, AHY emphasized that future development should not only focus on physical aspects but must also prioritize tangible impacts on society.
“We want to ensure that development is not merely instrumental, but also delivers clear outcomes and impacts. This is where the role of universities becomes crucial,” he stated.
He also highlighted the importance of a collaborative, or pentahelix, approach, where research and innovation from higher education institutions serve as the foundation for sustainable development. According to him, ITK’s presence as a technology institute outside Java represents a strategic step toward equitable technological advancement across Indonesia.
“We must ensure alignment between government, business, education, and media. ITK plays a vital role in producing high-quality human resources capable of addressing future challenges,” he added.
ITK’s journey began with the signing of its inauguration plaque by the 6th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, on October 6, 2014, marking a significant milestone in its establishment as a state university focused on technology.
The Rector of ITK affirmed that the institution adopts a futuristic approach in developing its faculties and study programs, in line with sustainable development principles and future industry demands.
“We are building ITK with a long-term vision, not only as an educational institution but also as an innovation hub that creates real impact for society,” he explained.
One of the strategic agendas discussed was the formation of the ITX consortium, involving four state technology universities: ITB, ITS, ITK, and ITERA. This consortium is designed to act as a catalyst for economic transformation driven by innovation and technology, focusing on strengthening applied research, technology downstreaming, and the development of deep-tech startups.
During the meeting, ITK also formally invited AHY to deliver a keynote speech at its 12th Anniversary (Dies Natalis), which will be held on October 6, 2026, under the theme “Unity in Diversity: From ITK for the Archipelago.”
This meeting reaffirmed that Indonesia’s future development requires strong cross-sector collaboration, with universities serving as one of the key pillars. Through its achievements and strategic plans, ITK continues to position itself not only as an academically growing institution but also as a contributor to national development.
