Balikpapan, September 25, 2025 – Perumda Tirta Manuntung Balikpapan (PTMB), through the Water Resilience Balikpapan (RENBIS 2025–2029) program, held the PTMB Goes to Campus event at the Auditorium of Building A, Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK). This event aimed to introduce PTMB’s programs, strategies, and concrete steps in addressing the challenges of clean water supply in Balikpapan.

The socialization event was attended by PTMB’s board of directors, lecturers, students, and representatives of the local government. In its opening remarks, PTMB emphasized that collaboration with universities is a vital step in fostering a young generation that cares about the sustainability of water resources and contributes directly to innovation in clean water management.

The presentation highlighted several key ongoing programs, including:

  • Optimization of water treatment plants (IPA) to maximize production capacity.
  • Revitalization of distribution pipelines to reduce leakage and improve efficiency.
  • Utilization of District Meter Area (DMA) technology as a monitoring system for water pressure and flow.
  • Plans for reservoir development and capacity expansion, including the utilization of the Sepaku–Semoi Water Supply System (SPAM) starting in 2028.

Through this activity, ITK students were invited to gain a deeper understanding of the current state of water supply in Balikpapan, including challenges related to the city’s growing population, which reached more than 762,000 residents as of June 2025. An interactive discussion was also held to gather students’ creative ideas, particularly in developing appropriate technologies to support future clean water availability.

The event concluded with PTMB encouraging ITK’s academic community to continue playing an active role in research, innovation, and community service in the field of water resilience. PTMB reaffirmed its commitment to making this program a bridge for synergy between practitioners, government, and academia in realizing Balikpapan as a strong and water-resilient city.
