Balikpapan – The Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) has introduced an innovative renewable energy technology in the form of a Floating Wind Energy Vessel, or Mobile Floating Structure (MFS). This technology was developed by Ir. M. Uswah Pawara, ST., M.Sus.Sci and Dr.Eng. Ir. Faisal Mahmuddin, ST., M.Inf.Tech., M.Eng, as a solution to harness Indonesia’s abundant offshore wind potential and convert it into clean, sustainable electricity.

The MFS concept was inspired by the growing national energy demand and the continuing dependence on fossil fuels. At the same time, Indonesia’s offshore wind energy potential remains largely untapped. With more than 17,000 islands, the country possesses vast coastlines that hold tremendous promise for renewable energy development.

A Floating Vessel Adaptable to Wind Seasons

Unlike conventional onshore or offshore wind turbines that are fixed in one location, the MFS is designed as a catamaran-type vessel capable of moving to areas with the best wind conditions. Its mobility allows it to adapt to seasonal wind variations, ensuring consistent and optimal energy generation throughout the year.

According to the research conducted by Ir. M. Uswah Pawara and Dr.Eng. Ir. Faisal Mahmuddin, an MFS equipped with four wind turbines can produce up to 1,242 kW during peak wind season, particularly in July. The waters surrounding Sulawesi and Maluku have been identified as highly promising locations, with wind energy densities ranging between 40–260 W/m².

Positive Impact on Energy Transition and Society

Beyond supporting the shift toward clean energy, the MFS innovation also opens new economic opportunities in shipbuilding, turbine maintenance, and renewable energy industries. This system is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s energy resilience, particularly in maritime regions rich in natural resources.

Simulation results indicate that the MFS can generate up to 29,800 kWh of energy per month, demonstrating the vast potential of offshore wind power in supporting the nation’s move toward energy independence.

Toward Indonesia’s Blue Energy Independence

Through this innovation, ITK reaffirms its commitment to advancing sustainable blue energy and environmentally friendly technologies. The floating wind energy vessel represents a strategic step toward Indonesia’s energy self-sufficiency, and could one day become a new maritime innovation icon that harnesses the power of the ocean winds to light up the future.
